Political Relations Between Türkiye and Australia, 6.12.2022
Türkiye and Australia established diplomatic relations in 1967. The Turkish Embassy in Canberra was opened the same year, the Australian Embassy in Ankara, a year later.
Türkiye has two General Consulates in Sydney and in Melbourne as well as an Honorary Consulate in Brisbane. Australia has a General Consulate in Istanbul and a Consulate in Çanakkale.
The Battles of Çanakkale, encountering Turkish army and ANZAC troops in the British Army, have a special place in the history of the relations between the two countries.
The commemoration ceremonies of the anniversary of the Battles of Çanakkale are held annually in Çanakkale on 24-25 April, with a wide participation from Australia. The Centenary of the Battles of Çanakkale were commemorated in April 2015 in Istanbul and Çanakkale with the participation of a large number of countries and international organizations.
Australian former Prime Minister the Hon. Tony Abbot visited Türkiye on 22-26 April 2015 on the occasion of centenary commemorations. Türkiye and Australia agreed in a Joint Statement on 22 April 2015 to enhance bilateral cooperation on counter terrorism.
Then Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove visited Türkiye on 3-9 August 2015 to participate in the ANZAC Day commemorations held in Gallipoli.
Australian former Prime Minister, the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull visited Türkiye on the occasion of the G20 Summit which was held on 15-16 November 2015 and received by H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye.
Australian former Foreign Minister Hon. Julie Bishop visited Türkiye on 23-25 April 2017 on the occasion of the 102nd anniversary of the Çanakkale Land Battles and Anzac Day ceremonies.
Türkiye and Australia have an efficient cooperation in the UN, G20 and MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, Korea Republic, Türkiye and Australia).
Turkish community living in Australia constitutes a bridge of friendship between the two nations. Despite the hostile activities of anti-Turkish lobbies, bilateral relations emanating from the Çanakkale battles and expanding through the Turkish community of around 150.000 in Australia continue to develop, owing to high-level visits from both sides.
A Turkish program has been functional in the Centre for Arab & Islamic Studies of Australian National University since 1994.
Turkish-Australian Cultural Center in Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University was opened in 2009.
International Maarif Schools of Australia opened on 4 February 2019 and moved to its own premises in Auburn, Sydney on 10 June 2020.
